To whom it may concern

A Couple of weeks ago I finished a fashion photography workshop with the amazing instructor C. Stephen Hurst and the entire workshop exceeded my expectaions. Stephen is not only excellent photographer, and phenomenal artist but also fantastic teacher!!! Each class was great and organization was superb! Tons of useful information and coverage of various lighting techniques. Stephen’s communication skills created a positive learning environment where everyone had equal opportunities to try lighting. I really love his teaching style and the way he critiques the work – because he pushes you to find your own voice as a photographer. Stephen is also a great mentor and an inspiration and I feel honored that I could be one of his students!

Yours sincerely

Spring 2010 Student Letters of Recommendation

———————————–

Today’s post brings us more student Letters of recommendation from my most recent workshop at the International Center of Photography in midtown Manhattan.

You can see additional letters/feedback Here, and, There; and more, Here, and, There.

The next workshop: a two weekend Studio Fashion workshop will be held in Feb 2011 in conjunction with ICP at Splashlight Studios. (Here is the direct link.)

March 31st 2010

Stephen,

I want to let you know how much I appreciated your recent Fashion workshop. The constant stream of invaluable information mixed with hands-on studio work and insider practical tips was a superb learning environment. Spending 4 days being mentored by you and receiving the benefit of your insight was a great learning experience. The gifted models and make-up artists you selected only served to enhance that learning.

There were many aspects of the workshop that were invaluable, from model direction, to set design and lighting advice. I found the storyboard assignment (and the in depth critique) to be a real opportunity to give substance to creative juices and to think through the practicalities of how to make an idea reality.

And on top of all this, I had a lot of fun.

Fun, learning and working with gifted people who share a passion in photography – what more could you ask?

I can honestly say that this was an invaluable experience that I would recommend to any photographer. The workshop may have been directed at Fashion photography, but I see how the lessons are equally applicable to other disciplines.

Thanks again,

John McGurk

Dear Stephen,

Thank you for exceeding my expectations.

I enrolled in your course in fashion photography for several reasons, none of which was to become a fashion photographer. Instead I wanted to be able to integrate a sense of fashion into my wedding and portrait work, especially when photographing young brides and high school seniors. I also wanted to be able to help aspiring professional models develop portfolios that meet contemporary agency standards.

In each case, my goals were achieved. The lighting and posing techniques you shared have already been put to good use. And the information you provided about model portfolios, including content, image specifications and industry expectations gives me the ability to pursue this market with confidence.

As a fellow instructor, I must comment on your teaching style. Your professional demeanor and communication skills created a positive learning environment where everyone had equal opportunities to try lighting and posing methods. Your critique of images was direct yet cognizant of artists’ sensitivities.

Thank you again for an excellent learning experience. I look forward to attending your classes and workshops in the future as I continue my education.

Kindest Regards,

Wilson Black

Summer 09′ Student Letters of Recommendation

Thoughts, Feedback, and reactions from my most recent Fashion Intensive Workshop @ the International Center of Photography.

—————————-

Stephen Hurst is not only an amazing photographer but also a fantastic teacher. I had the privilege of taking his five-day summer workshop at ICP. His wealth of knowledge on all topics was mind blowing. I kept thinking how could someone retain so much technical information on such a massive array of topics without note cards? It was a pure pleasure working with Stephen. His love for photography and teaching was evident. His technical skills meshed with work experience provided a learning format that I have yet to experience before taking Stephens class. He was amazingly open, not only about his own work and approach, but to any questions I asked. He wastes no time getting the students into hands on shooting situations. We were immediately putting new information into practice while exploring various lighting setups and approaches with a watchful eye. The format was a perfect balance of discussions and shooting. We covered advanced lighting setups, communicating with your models, locations scouting, contracts and shooting both in and out of studio. I would recommend his class to any photographer wishing to expand their knowledge of fashion photography.

Stephen was Awesome!

Very rarely does one have the opportunity to train under a truly gifted photographer who also happens to be a wonderful human being. Participating in Stephen Hurst’s Photography of Fashion workshop at ICP has truly been a joy and privilege all the way and undoubtedly the best photography course I have ever taken.

From day one Stephen strives to immerse his students into the real world of fashion – equipment, lighting, models, wardrobe, make-up artists and the subtle interplay of their relationships with the camera and photographer.

By day two, it was almost a given that Stephen would go above and beyond the call of duty to share the minutia of his craft, nuances of his art and gently nudge each of his students towards excellence and a stunning visual paradise recorded through their respective lenses!

Although on my way back to Europe/Asia, I look forward to working professionally with Stephen hopefully in the not so distant future. In the interim, I would strongly recommend Stephen’s workshops to everyone looking seriously at the fashion industry with a photographic eye!

Student Feedback

I just finished a Fashion Photography course with Stephen Hurst at ICP and I am delighted with the experience. He has been a source of inspiration. I loved every class. The practical approach of Stephen method makes you start thinking as a photographer from day 1. Stephen covered every aspect of a fashion shoot with extremely simplicity. His teaching style pushes you to find your own voice as a photographer vs imposing styles or point of views. I recommend Stephen course and method for anybody seriously considering fashion photography. You will learn, get inspired…and have lots of fun at the same time.

Best, Javier Bonilla.

More Student Letters of Recommendation

Peta Ridley

LONDON, W9 2DH

United Kingdom

I had the honour of being Stephen’s student during the summer of 2008 at ICP in Manhattan, studying the Art of Fashion Photography.

Stephen’s passion for his work, incredible knowledge of his craft and generous teaching style is a gift that he passes onto his students. Stephen has the ability to balance teaching technique and craft, along with providing invaluable practical skills in working with studio lighting, models, make-up artists and stylists.  He has the rare ability to find a unique and divine spark in each student and encourage this as an essential part of the creative process.

In taking Stephen’s course I have discovered a true passion for this field and have since been accepted to study at the London University of the Arts, College of Fashion for an MA in Fashion Photography. In large part, this has been made possible through Stephen’s valuable tutelage.

Stephen is an amazing fashion photographer, a fabulous teacher and a true artist. He’s also a great mentor and an inspiration and I feel honoured and privileged to have been his student.

Something New: Student Letters of Recommendation

Rarely do I write about my time as an instructor at the International Center of Photography here on my News/Random don’t call it a blog; and quite frankly, that tradition will continue.

Trying something new, I’ll let my former students do the talkin’.

See student Letters of Recommendation below.

————————————-

Stephen Hurst is a true artist. I took his five-day workshop in July 2007 and have been forever changed as a photographer. First of all, his set up was the best of any group workshop I’ve taken. He had us shooting four full days, two in studio and two on location, taking turns directing models, lights and backgrounds. I hadn’t had any real experience working with models and I started the class unsure of how to work with models or how to be creative in the studio but I ended the workshop full of energy, ideas and several killer images that are still in my portfolio and attracting attention, almost two years later. His teaching style is the perfect balance of explaining, demonstrating and sharing information, as well as providing the space and encouragement to explore your own style. He also balances prepared information with lots of room to answer questions, review work, and discuss the art of fashion photography. It’s obvious that he pursues his photography as an art, and he also shared his personal artistic approach and inspirations. With all of those pieces together, I learned the tools and perspective I needed to confidently explore my own fashion photography style.

To whom it may concern

Stephen Hurst is an excellent photographer and a great teacher. When teaching, he seems to have no secrets because he’s generous and never refuses to give advices and useful information. His classes are always exciting and a great source to learn interesting things and techniques about fashion photography and the way to deal with models, artists and clients. I consider the class in Fashion Photography (winter 2009) by Hurst my best experience ever had at the International Center of Photography in New York and I would recommend him and his classes to everybody who is going to learn more about fashion, even if already a professional photographer as I am.
